While everyone knows about male elk dominating during mating season, little spend the time to watch the females when food can become scarce. On the Elk Refuge every year, thousands of elk converge onto a narrow feeding ground and some quite simply, well, don’t want to share their resources with others. Here, I and my clients witnessed a female in the early morning light stand up on her back legs to box with another over her food, standing tall and with prowess.
